This is how I learned shifting.

Dad would call out a gear, and I would select it. Eventually I learned what gear we were supposed to be in, and was able to listen/anticipate when to grab the next one. Listen for the lift, grab the gear. Easy, right?

This is also how I learned thy you could shift without the clutch, when I did that unexpected 2-3 shift when he lifted once in traffic.

I looked up at him and said. “You can do that?????”

I used to sit in the drivers seat and shift the gears with the clutch when I was like 7 in my mother’s Rover Metro (you might need to Google that because not available in US). Well that and driving stick is natural to most Europeans.

This is how I started. This is how I have been teaching my kids. They already know how to listen to the engine to know when to shift. I started by making them listen for me to let off the gas and push in the clutch. The latest exercise is having them tell me when it is time to shift.

Lots of fun!
